[/color]” There was no mistaking the voice of Balin, EVER. I squeaked and pushed away from my… friend. Upon entering my room I gave him a look of mixed emotions before shutting the door. Leaning against it trembling, I slid down to the floor. However, I couldn’t help overhearing the rather loud conversation going on outside. “Uncle…”
At first I couldn’t tell you how it all came about. The death was very tragic! No one could have solved who-done-it without properly knowing the story and routine of my life, which I will start by telling you now how it all happened. My life was usual even for the likes of you who are reading this. I lived and loved, and died an unhappy ending, wait I already said that. Curse being dead! You forget lots of things being dead… oh yes, the story.
I had grown up around Thorin and his nephews for many long years before I started traveling the road, and seeing all there was to be seen between The Blue Mountains and Bree. Fíli, oh goodness, the most handsome of Dwarves (aside from his loony brother), was my best friend. With him around I felt safe and secure. I could tell him anything! He would take it with the most serious of attitudes… until he took it and turned it into a joke, which at first was really unsettling, but we worked it out somehow. His brother was adorable too, though I wasn’t as close to him as I was Fíli. We had a merry childhood together, I could rough it and tough it with the best of them! - - oh, is this getting too boring? WHAT?! FIRST KISS!? [Giggle] Oh alright…
How that happened was purely a mistake. Though now that I think about it all the events that lead to it might only been a showing of deeper, more concealed feelings. All the more romantic, right? Well, let me start off with saying that Balin and I weren’t on the greatest of terms. He hated me, I knew it. The way he looked at me, the way he spoke directly and stiffly towards me in front of the others, Fíli was my protection from his great uncles wrath. One night it had been really terrible. I had just brought home some treasures from the lovely Shire to give to Fíli and Kíli when he started in on a rant about how rude and impolite I was. I had nearly come to tears before Fíli kindly escorted me to the room I was staying in. He opened my door, I turned to thank him but he shook his head and gently whipped away my tears. I confess I was a little taken aback by this; he had always allowed me to thank him and then just leave. He held my face, gently caressing it. I blushed slightly and tried to pull away, he caught me by the waist. The next thing I knew and felt were his lips touching mine. It seemed to last forever, as most first kisses do.
Exactly how long we had been there, the way we were was beyond me, and I’m pretty sure beyond whoever kept time. All I know is that this awkward bliss-filled moment was cut extremely short by an indignant “AHEM! Fíli, what are you doing?!
“Don’t Uncle me, Fíli. I know what you were doing, and it wasn’t right.”
“Uncle, please…”
“No, Fíli. I want you to go to your room and think about what you have just done.” Balin’s voice had grown a little softer but his words were still hard. I heard Fíli walk away, with the footsteps of his uncle right behind him. I sighed, turned out the light, flopped on the cold – but comfortable – bed, and fell asleep.
Wha- Why, of course he wasn’t my true lover! Whatever made you compile that? I knew I should have explained a bit more before telling you that bit of story, oh well. [Sigh]. No, no. When I tell you who it was you will never forgive me. NO! It isn’t, or wasn’t, Kíli! What do you think this is a soap opera? Gloin was my lover, though I can’t say I loved him in return. Gloin was so sweet to me growing up. He was only a few years older than I, but he would always give me the prettiest flowers he swears he could find. When there was nowhere for me to sit, he would be a gentlemen and give me his seat. He was very polite towards me, caring and concerned. But I couldn’t help but feel that it was all in vain as I already had my complete trust in Fíli. Even though he knew this, he still treated me like a lady. He would have saved my life had I listened to him…
Little did I know that Balin was planning my murder behind my back. I should have seen the signs! He suddenly started being nice to me three or four months before my murder. I fell into the trap, and so did everyone else! Pick nicks in the fields of the beautiful Shire, complementing me on how I had dressed or done my hair. It was all rather off-hand but I supposed he had seen the error of his ways and was trying to make up for it.
“Please, my love, you must listen to me.” Gloin pleaded. I must have given him a quire look because he blushed – or his face grew red, whichever. He retold the fantastic tale which he had heard while walking past a bar:
“She must be finished within the next few weeks. I don’t want my cousin’s nephew to give up his royal right.” Balin had slammed his ale on the table and was shouting, “He is of royal blood! And she… she is nothing more than a.. a…”
“The other voice,” Gloin had said, “Was too quiet for me to hear.” Then he continued, “I know, I know. It’s just…” Balin sighed in frustration, and then went quiet for a moment. “It must be done so that it looks like an accident, do you understand me? Good.”
“And that is why you must be careful.” I stared at him in amazement. Gloin was very sweet, but he might be taking his imaginative fancies too far this time! “I…” I started, “Please!” He pleaded, taking my hands in his and holding them tight, but not too tight. “I will.” How could I refuse!? It was nearly impossible. Gloin looked like he wanted to say more, but at that moment Bifur cut in. Least to say, Bifur didn’t bother me again, at least not without a red hand print on his cheek. The insolent ruffian!
Balin invited me on another pick nick, and I agreed to go. Nori, one of the ‘Ori’ brothers, was tagging along; something about the fresh air doing him a lot of good. I didn’t complain. It wasn’t until I was packing the basket that Gloin appeared and helped me, repeating his plea for me to be careful. I told him I would and set out to our destination.
The view was beautiful. One could see for miles and miles! The rolling hills of the shire with their peaceful white sheep floating across the hills… [Dreamy sigh] It would be the last peaceful thing I would see. We had just finished eating and were sitting back making out shapes in the clouds as they floated by. I flew into hysterics as Nori thought he had seen one of the little folk riding a fire breathing dragon, “Of course that is ridiculous.” And we both laughed. “Here now, why don’t you two go for a lovely stroll?” Balin suggested. “A phenomenal idea, old man!” Nori said, offering to help me up from the blanket we were sitting on.
Together we walked among the hills, never getting too far out of sight of the old dwarf. Nori had me completely entertained as he told me tales of his travels, some serious, and some were worthy of the uncontrollable laughter I gave them. I started to poke him, no idea why, but he didn’t seem to mind and poked back. Then we started a game of tag, he chased me and I chased him. Once he caught me and wouldn’t let go, saying he wouldn’t do so till I gave him a small kiss. I smiled and blushed a bit. He couldn’t be serious; it was all fun and games! Yet, in his eyes there was more seriousness than I saw even from Fíli when we would play tag. “Um…” I tried to pull away, but he followed me. Next thing I knew we were rolling down a hill, surprise echoed in each other’s faces, and I felt something sharp dig into my chest. Horror was evident on Nori’s face, and that was the last thing I saw.
